Purity

Sometimes translated as cleanliness, there are two levels to the discipline of purity, both which lead to the same result: purity of the body and purity of the mind. Purity of the body means taking care of the physical aspect with proper diet, sufficient exercise, adequate rest and sleep, medical assistance when necessary. Without these the mind quickly becomes dull, losing its ability to focus, to reason and to gain insight, all of which are basic requirements for any spiritual endeavor. Purity of the mind means honesty and integrity—in essence, satisfaction of the five yamas. Without this, the mind will remain clouded by negative states such as anxiety, guilt, anger, confusion, all of which will effectively block any attempts at deeper investigation.
